After being held up for a good part of last year while European authorities mulled if this merger will create monopoly situation in the over night parcel business, now they have decided that the combined entity is still behind UPS and market leader DHL and hence its ok.
Well not sure why it took them so much time to add 1 + 2 and come up with this conclusion, If there were norms set up about market percentages while rejecting UPS's bid three years ago.
It is mentioned that FedEx and TNT don't have much of an overlap in their businesses after FedEx withdrew a few years back with massive losses. Does it mean they don't service the same markets or in those they don't make up a monopoly ! They would probably have a presence in all the major European countries which will need to be optimized with TNT's infra/ assets.
Their systems will also be required to be integrated and optimized or they will probably run in parallel until everyone is doubly sure that this is working out. Till that time there will be some integration framework put across the two company operations to leverage each others setup most optimally
