Impact of Global Warming

How is the now inevitable or already in effect global warming/ Climate change or freaky weather going to affect the Logistics world

  • Freaky Weather affecting Logistics Routes and Modes: Unprecedented weather disruptions in frequency and severity - flash floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, snow storms and droughts will greatly affect the cost, mode and lead times of supply chains all over the world.
  • Raw material shortages due to weather changes (maybe shortage of rubber, metals, fuel) might disrupt the modes of transport.
  • Adhering to new Carbon footprint/ Emissions/ Safety related regulations: might mean lot of investments in new or modified fleets overall increasing the freight costs and further disrupting the procurement sources and thus logistics routes/ channels
    • Hot weather and rising sea levels will reduce productivity and production in the traditional low cost sources
    • Climate aware consumers could demand or opt for sustainable logistics and packing standards. They might even increasingly opt for local produce.
    • Climate change also has the potential of adversely affecting the world economies and wealth in the near future (and in the close to near future economy will be least of our worries if we dont get our act together) which will affect the overall demand/ trade and thus the need for logistics
