Winners of the 2017 Supply Chain Innovation Awards Presented by SupplyChainBrain & CSCMP have thrown up a couple of interesting areas of innovation.
A Pharma industry forum has created a collaborative framework TransCelerate Comparator Network, where companies can efficiently and relatively inexpensively test their potential medicines against competitors’ products that are already approved and available in the marketplace.
Here companies are collaborating on core competencies to come up with a product which will potentially rival theirs. This means not only sharing the product for analysis of its composition and effect but also collaborating to resolve operational challenges like storing, securing and maintaining comparator drug supply throughout the study. It also helps in ensuring genuine supply of drugs (counterfeiting is a major problem) through the various regulatory processes. There are other initiatives which are also promoted by this Network which include development of Common protocol development, Placebo and Standard of Care Data sharing and also Clinical Data standards.
Such a collaborative network going across businesses can reduce overall development costs & lead times and could go a long way to spur innovative medicines and treatment solutions.

This is great news for the patients and quite surprising from the Big Pharma companies which in recent years have received much criticism for their high prices. The Network was setup in 2012 and now includes 20 major pharma companies and I would like to believe that the reason the award is being presented in 2017 is that it has started to yield some tangible benefits now.
Another winner is a business which had a serious problem with customer-imposed fines for such things as missed delivery targets, improper labeling, incorrect numerical identification of product, pricing errors and shipment shortages but now it has developed an app to handle the photos which could potentially prove that it wasn’t always at fault.
After many years of quickly acquiescing to customer demands, the companies have finally started feeling the pinch and have at least started to provide some sort of proof back to their customers to push back on some unreasonable demands. Payback time.
Other awards are for enterprises who continue to leverage technology solutions and process improvements to squeeze out more efficiency.
